Missing Friday 9/5/08 - Lackawanna, NY - Etidal Abdullah - please help!

Anonymous started this conversation

We are pleading with the public to help find our daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, citizen.  She is a wonderful person and no one deserves this.  Besides the LPD's number there is a tipline: 563-0081.  Please and thank you.  Inserted is another picture of Etidal.

Friends and family of 21-year-old Etidal Abdullah are asking the community for help in finding the missing woman.

Her uncle says she was last seen yesteday (FRIDAY 9/5/08) afternoon in the Save-A-Lot parking lot on Abbott Road.

Etidal is described as being 5 feet tall and an approximately 95 lbs.

Her family is offering a $15,000 reward for any information leading to her whereabouts.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lackawanna Police Department at 822-4900.

***On a personal note, please keep this young woman and her family in your thoughts and prayers. This happened in my neighborhood, in the middle of the afternoon. Please pray that she is found unharmed and brought home soon. Thank you.

And they are in mine...  apparently the case is sitll open until she makes an appearance... but the police are not actively working the case since she called the police station and requested to be left alone... She is still listed as a missing person.

Hi Deeneecy,

I have not heard anything since my last post. The has not been anything on, or in, the news. We can only hope and pray she is well.

I have been following this story as closely as possible, is there STILL no new news on this beautiful young lady??  Have there been any more reports of phone calls from her?  I would like to know how the police determined that the 1st phone call made by "her" was actually this lady?   How do they know it was not someone who knew her well and may have been posing AS her?

This is all very confusing and I am hoping this family is not allowing the police department to go to sleep on this case.  Even if she left willingly, I believe her family needs to make sure the message they convey to her is all they want is to know she is alive, healthy and happy.

I pray, this is not a case of foul play and she is no longer with us.  Please everyone, do not let this story die.  Everyone NEEDS to continue looking for her until EVERYONE KNOWS without a doubt where she is.

I understand completely. But as I said they are a very tightly knit community - think of it as one big family. - A VERY large family.

I do wish other disappearances were given the same amount of news time and police attention - not to mention the attention it has garnered on the web.

I hope no one has to go through this - EVER. I can't imagine the pain - even anger and frustration. But you do brign up a very good point - why isn't every disappearance given the same attention?

I understand the amount of resources it would take (unimaginable!) and there are websites ( including our own page here) plus the amber alerts. But I was thinking, there are tv stations for everything from basketball to televangelists -why not have one station devoted to missing persons? Think about it. 1 station airing missing persons 24/7 across the US and canada. Why hasn't this been done?

Reply to who-knew--I understand the frustration of the family, not knowing the whereabouts of their daughter. I too am the mother of 2 daughters. I can also understand how her fiance must feel being ditched for another man. If this young woman is safe and well and  with whom she wants to be with it is very selfish of her not to contact her family and tell them so. It is to bad this much attention is not given to the thousands of runaways and missing children and adults in the rest of our country. I have never heard of so much commotion over one missing young adult woman in my life. If it were one of my daughters I'm sure I would be lucky to make a bleep on my local news or newspaper. I'm not being sarcastic or snied, Iam just saying it like it is. I do wish her well and safe.    sheshe030

I understand your frustration with yemeni's comment. What is very difficult for us, as americans, to understand is that the muslim community is very closely knit and very rich in honor and tradition.

Correct me if I am wrong, here: it is my understanding ( from news reports) that Etidal was promised to be married to a young man from Yemen ( as is their custom). No, this was not arranged without her consent. However, if she had an american boyfriend while she was engaged to another man, it would dishonor her family because she had thereby broken the engagement - it is very similar to breaking an american contract. I know it soulnds very business-like however, the muslim women are raised in this tradition, but it is ultimately their choice whom they choose to marry. You must understand, these are not ignorant people. They are very well educated - both in muslim religion/tradition and the american way of life.

IF Etidal left of her own free will and it was NOT a kidnapping/missing person situation, then yes, she would have dishonored her family - IF she left with a boyfriend.

However, as it stands, according to news reports, she supposedly made a call to the  police claiming to be fine and wanting to be left alone. BUT the police will not close the case until they speak with her in person and they can see for themselves that she is ok.

At this point the family has few answers and I can only imagine their frustration. Everyone wants her home safely. However, if she chose to leave, then she should have been an adult and acted as such. Now, it is up to her to alleviate everyone's fears.

Whatever the case may be, we all want her to be safe.

I have heard them too and I hope they are true. I pray she returns home safely. I understand what it is like to be young and impetuous, if I had listened to my parents my life would be totally different today. But I didn't, and I have my share of regrets. If this is the case with Etidal, I pray she listens to the wisdom of her parents and family and comes home soon. Sometimes our families see what we choose not to.

I cannot believe someone would be worried about a person "dishonoring" their "family"...

Maybe she is being held against her will... maybe she had a reason to run from her family... only she knows right now... who knows, maybe her family has "dishonored" her....

I pray she is healthy and happy...

According to the latest news, a person claiming to be Etidal has called the police and told them to stop looking for her. The family has heard the tape and said that it was Etidal. However, the police are not ruling out that she may have made the call under duress. They are keeping the investigation open as a missing person, until she proves to them in person, that she is unharmed.

In answer to your questions, yes the police have viewed the footage from the security cameras, which only show her leaving the store - nothing more.  Additionally, family and friends have been circulating flyers around the city.

I have been trying to circulate the information online where they may have missed - myspace, live journal, etc..But they have everything pretty much covered. (craigs list, you tube...) Actually, I have never seen such a thorough canvassing  by a local community ( online and local) before in my life. It is amazing to see so many people work together toward a common goal. I think there are about 8-10 pages on google, of sites searching for this young woman.

I, too pray for her safe return. And I want to thank everyone for their help and prayers. I hope that no harm has come to this beautiful young woman and she returns home safely, soon. Or at the very least, contacts her family directly, to alleviate their fears.

Thank you.

God Bless the family of Etidal Abdullah. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Are there video cameras in the Sav-A-Lot store or parking lot? Have the police looked at the video footage?

Have you handed out flyers in the Sav-A-LOt parking lot or anywhere else that Etidal might go.

We will pray for Etidal quick return to her family.
